BECOMING A MAKEUP ARTIST WAS SOMETHING I NEVER THOUGHT COULD OR WOULD BE POSSIBLE. I KNEW I WANTED TO DO IT QUITE EARLY ON AND LIKE MANY OTHERS, AN INTEREST IN FILM AND WATCHING MONSTER MOVIES SPARKED THE INTEREST.
AS A TEENAGER I WAS PART OF THE LOCAL BRANCH OF THE ST JOHN AMBULANCE SERVICE AND BEFORE LONG WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING ALOT OF CASUALTY SIMULATION FOR FIRST AID TRAINING EXERCISES.
THE NEXT STEP WAS TO LEAVE SCHOOL AND SEE WHETHER I COULD ACTUALLY PERSUE WHAT I WANTED TO DO.
UNFORTUNATELY I WASNT ACADEMIC AND LEFT SCHOOL WITH NO REAL QUALIFICATIONS, WELL THE ONES I NEEDED TO STUDY MAKEUP. AS I HADNT ENJOYED SCHOOL I REALLY DIDN'T FEEL LIKE I WANTED TO GO THROUGH COLLEGE, AT THAT POINT ANYWAY.
I PUT MAKEUP ON HOLD AND GOT A JOB - AS A POSTMAN.
I SAID TO MYSELF, I DIDNT WANT TO WALK THE STREETS FOREVER.
THEN IN 1995 AND NEARLY 8 YEARS LATER, I ENROLLED AT COLLEGE TO DO A MAKEUP COURSE. A COUPLE MORE YEARS AND I PUT POSTING LETTERS BEHIND ME AND SET ABOUT TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING AT BEING A MAKEUP ARTIST. DIFFICULT AT FIRST, MAKING CALLS, SENDING LETTERS - NOT GETTING ANYWHERE AT ALL.
THEN OUT OF THE BLUE, I HEARD BACK FROM NICK DUDMAN, INVITING ME TO TAKE ONE OF HIS SHORT COURSES. I JUMPED AT THE CHANCE.
AFTER THE FOUR DAYS WERE OVER, I WAS VERY FORTUNATE AND NICK OFFERED ME A JOB ON THE UPCOMING HARRY POTTER FILM.
I HAD NOTHING BUT NICKS WORD AND 5 MONTHS TO WAIT UNTIL I HAD MY FIRST MAJOR FILM JOB.
SO I LEFT HOME IN THE NORTH AND HEADED SOUTH. SCARY - BUT I HAD TO DO IT.
I HAVE BEEN AND STILL CONSIDER MYSELF VERY LUCKY TO BE DOING THIS FOR A LIVING AND FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD EMPLOYMENT SINCE MAKING THE BIG BREAK. I HAVE MET, WORKED WITH AND LEARNT SO MUCH FROM MANY TALENTED ARTISTS ALONG THE WAY AND AM GRATEFUL TO MANY PEOPLE FOR GETTING ME TO WHERE I AM NOW.
I LOVE MY JOB.
